Who Owns What? IP Rights in Freelance Contracts

TL;DR

Just because a client paid doesn’t automatically mean they own everything. Intellectual property terms decide who controls the work — and when.

Why IP Matters More Than You Think

When you design a logo, write code, or create content, you automatically own the intellectual property — unless your contract says otherwise. Many freelancers unknowingly give away full rights without proper terms.

Ownership vs. License

There’s a big difference between transferring ownership and granting a license. Ownership means the client controls everything. A license allows them to use the work while you retain rights, such as showcasing it in your portfolio.

Pro Tip

Tie IP transfer to final payment. Include: “Ownership of the final deliverables transfers only after full payment is received.” This protects you if a client disappears.

Portfolio Rights

Always reserve the right to display your work for self-promotion unless confidentiality is required. Otherwise, you could legally be blocked from showing your own projects.
